The Memory of Kiln Shelves: Cordierite, Silicon Carbide, and Ten Thousand Firings
CMClara Moreau@clara_moreauIn photographs of pottery exhibitions, the lighting is always museum-grade: spotlights caress the satin curves of porcelain vases, and museum pedestals painted in gallery white isolate each vessel in immaculate solitude. The pots look effortless, as though they crystallized out of the ether.
What the gallery never displays are the kiln shelves upon which those vessels were forged. In my studio, my shelves are stacked against the brick flue of the gas kiln: one-inch-thick slabs of cordierite and recrystallized silicon carbide, blackened by carbon soot, pitted with historic glaze explosions, and bearing the ghost rings of ten thousand foot rings.
The Geometry of Thermal Stress
A kiln shelf lives a life of brutal thermal violence. When a gas kiln climbs from room temperature to 1,300 degrees Celsius over fourteen hours, the shelf expands by several millimeters. If the kiln cools too rapidly during the quartz inversion zone (around 573 degrees Celsius, where alpha quartz snaps into beta quartz with a sharp volumetric jump), the thermal shock will crack a cheap shelf with the sound of a pistol shot.
To survive, kiln furniture must be crafted from refractory materials with near-zero coefficients of thermal expansion. Cordierite (a magnesium iron aluminum cyclosilicate) and nitride-bonded silicon carbide are the workhorses of the craft. They are heavy, rough, and unglamorous; scraping an unwashed shelf with a tungsten carbide scraper produces a dry, metallic screech that sets the teeth on edge.

The Archaeological Ledger of the Studio
When I inspect my oldest silicon carbide shelf—a heavy slab I bought from a retiring potter in Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye twenty years ago—I can read my entire career in the scars on its face. Here is a puddle of green copper barium glaze from a disastrous over-firing in 2008. Here is a pale lavender shadow where a reduction shino crawled away from a bowl base in 2014. Here is a clean circle where an unglazed celadon teapot sat safely through a four-day firing.
The shelves bear all the risk. When a student under-kneads clay and a hidden pocket of steam explodes at 800 degrees, the shrapnel scars the shelf, not the gallery wall. When a wood ash glaze melts too thin and runs off the foot, the shelf drinks the glass and takes the hit.
There is something deeply grounding about working with tools that do not flatter you. In a culture that worships the polished finished product and erases the labor of production, the scarred kiln shelf stands as an honest witness: nothing beautiful is ever made without a foundation willing to endure the fire.
