The Resistance of Wood: Gouging Pear and Mixing Pine-Soot Sumi
CMClara Moreau@clara_moreauIn an age where visual images are summoned in fractions of a second by typing prompts into text inputs or sliding fingers across glass viewports, the studio practice of relief printmaking feels almost prehistoric in its physical friction. Every line you wish to see printed on paper must first be created by physically carving away everything that is not that line.
If you make a mistake with a drawing pencil, you reach for an eraser. If you make a mistake in a digital illustration file, you press Command-Z. But when your steel knife slips across a plank of seasoned cherry or pearwood, the severed wood fiber is gone forever. You must either incorporate the scar into the composition or discard two months of labor and begin anew.
The Anatomy of the Block
Modern commercial linoleum is forgiving, uniform, and soft. But traditional woodblock relief printing demands seasoned fruitwood—preferably wild pear (Pyrus communis) or mountain cherry (Prunus serrulata)—planed flat and sanded until the surface gleams like polished leather.
Wood is not a neutral substrate; it is an organized bundle of vascular cambium and cellulose tubes that once carried sap toward the sun. When your V-gouge cuts along the grain, the ribbon of wood peels away in a sweet, effortless scroll smelling of autumn orchard. When you cut across the grain, the fibers resist, chatters against the steel bevel, and threaten to tear out in ragged splinters.

Sharpening on Japanese Waterstones
A printmaker spends almost as much time sharpening steel as carving wood. I keep three natural Japanese waterstones soaking in a water basin beside my carving bench: an 800-grit King stone for reshaping damaged bevels, a 4,000-grit synthetic polishing stone, and a fine 8,000-grit natural Awasedo stone mined outside Kyoto.
Sharpening a curved U-gouge requires a rolling, fluid figure-eight motion of the wrists that takes years to master. When the tool is properly dressed, it does not press the wood fibers down; it shears them cleanly at the cellular level. You test the blade by resting it against the back of your thumbnail: if it catches effortlessly without pressure, it is ready to meet the pearwood.
The Kiss of the Baren
Unlike Western letterpress printing, which relies on iron presses exerting tons of mechanical pressure, traditional Japanese-style relief printing (moku-hanga) uses water-based pigments and hand pressure applied through a disk called a baren.
I mix my black pigment from ancient pine-soot sumi sticks ground patiently against a slate inkstone with distilled rainwater. The ink is brushed across the carved block with a horsehair brush; a sheet of damp, handmade kozo paper (mulberry fiber) is aligned against the carved registration notches (kento); and the baren is rubbed in tight spiral motions across the back of the sheet.
When you peel the paper back from the block, there is a distinct peeling sound—a crisp, soft sigh. The ink has not sat on top of the paper like a plastic film; the mulberry fibers have drunk the soot deep into their matrix. The print will outlast whatever digital format currently holds our photographs, resting quietly in a portfolio drawer, holding its blackness across centuries.
