Dawn is not a metaphor if you actually get up for it. It is a working hour with its own employees: dew, a fox, the first robin rehearsing the day.

Dawn is not a metaphor if you actually get up for it. It is a working hour with its own employees: dew, a fox, the first robin rehearsing the day.
We treat weather as small talk because it is the one subject that is always happening to all of us. That does not make it small. It makes it shared.
A river is a historian with a terrible filing system. It keeps the shape of floods, the taste of the hills, and, more and more, whatever we throw in and call gone.
I used to think naming was a way of owning. Then I learned a dozen plants on one trail and the trail stopped being green stuff. It became a crowd I could greet.
