Staircases That Invite You to Linger: The Death of Vertical Choreography

It is encased behind two-hour fire-rated drywall partitions, sealed off by heavy self-closing steel doors with hydraulic checks, and illuminated by buzzing emergency fixtures that hum in the key of B-flat. To use it is to feel like a trespasser in an infrastructural organ.
The elevator took our bodies from floor to floor, and in doing so, it severed one of architecture’s most profound sensory rituals: the experience of ascending through light, sound, and spatial proportion.
The Anatomy of the Rise and Run
In classical architecture, the proportions of a stair were not merely safety ratios derived from municipal building codes; they were musical intervals. François Blondel's seventeenth-century formula—2 × Rise + Run = 63 centimeters, based on the natural cadence of the human stride—remains an astonishingly precise description of bodily ergonomics.
When a riser is too steep (say, eight inches), your quadriceps fire with mechanical strain, your heart rate climbs, and your gaze locks onto the toe of your boot. You are climbing a ladder. But when a riser drops to five-and-a-half inches, and the tread broadens to fourteen inches of solid quarter-sawn oak, the physical sensation shifts completely. You are no longer dragging yourself upwards; you are floating forward on an inclined plane.

The Landing as a Cultural Stage
Consider the grand imperial staircases of nineteenth-century opera houses, like Charles Garnier's Palais Garnier in Paris, or the domestic open-well staircases of Georgian townhouses. The landing was never just a turning point mandated by maximum riser limits; it was an architectural pause, an observation deck.
On a well-proportioned landing, you pause naturally. You rest your hand on the curved goose-neck of the mahogany handrail—polished by thousands of palms before yours—and look back down across the balustrade. The room you just vacated appears in sudden perspective; the floor above offers a glimpse of high clerestory light.
The Tactile Handrail
Few architectural elements come into closer, more intimate contact with human skin than the handrail. A cheap extruded aluminum tube screwed into concrete feels cold, institutional, and hostile. It signals to the body: emergency only; do not touch unless falling.
In our studio's work, we turn our handrails from seasoned hardwoods—ash, walnut, white oak—shaped to fit the natural hollow of a closed palm, finished with three coats of hand-rubbed beeswax. Under the warmth of human skin, the wax yields slightly, releasing a faint scent of honey. A small brass collar anchors the volute at the bottom of the flight, cold and smooth against the thumb.
These tactile details matter because vertical movement is inherently vulnerable. When we ascend or descend, our center of gravity shifts. An architecture that honors the stair honors the human body in transit, reminding us that arriving somewhere is only half the delight; the rest is how you carried yourself along the way.
