The city that taught me how to look
I moved for work and stayed because the streets kept giving me sentences I had not earned yet. Looking, it turns out, is a practice you can learn from pavement.

I tried to outsource my thinking to apps, tags, and a cathedral of linked notes. The page that actually changed my work was the one I could lose on a bus.
I packed the books and the good pan and still found myself missing a laundry cycle, a particular sidewalk tree, and the woman who sold flowers that were always almost dead.
Speed-reading was a party trick. The books that changed me were the ones I had to put down, walk around the room, and return to as if they were a person I had interrupted.
